During some quests you will have to get a certain quantity of a requested item.
Those item are usually dropped by monsters as a chest that you'll have to hit
in order to collect it's content.
Once you get 1 unit of the wanted item, this icon 
will show up on your map :
You can keep slaying monsters that gave you this item until your reach the
requested amount (take a lookat the quest's objective in order to know the
requested amount before starting the quest), and then head back to the camp
in order to deliver those items and finish the quest.
By talking to the following NPC, you will deliver the entire amount of the
wanted item (if you have more than enough, the excess will be sold; if you
have less than enough, you'll have to go get the rest of the items) :
